Most grooming mishaps come from love, not neglect — bathing a little too often, brushing a little too hard, trimming a little too close. Here are the five mistakes our grooming team sees every week, and what to do instead.

1. Bathing too often (or with the wrong shampoo)

Weekly baths strip the natural oils that keep skin calm and coats water-resistant. Most dogs need a bath every 4–8 weeks; most cats need one rarely, if ever. And human shampoo — even baby shampoo — sits at the wrong pH for pet skin and causes itching within days.

2. Brushing the top coat only

A quick once-over leaves mats brewing underneath, especially behind ears, under collars, and in armpits. Use a slicker brush in layers — part the coat and brush from the skin outward — and follow with a metal comb. If the comb snags, there’s a mat to work out gently, never yank.

3. Cutting nails too short, too rarely

Long nails change how paws land and strain joints over time, yet rushing the trim cuts the quick and teaches pets to fear the clippers. Trim a little every 1–2 weeks instead of a lot every few months, and keep styptic powder handy just in case.

4. Skipping ears and teeth

Ears trap wax and moisture — a weekly peek and a vet-approved wipe prevents most infections. Teeth matter even more: brush a few times a week with pet toothpaste, and schedule professional dental checks before breath turns truly alarming.

5. Shaving double coats in summer

It feels logical, but a double coat insulates against heat as well as cold. Shaving ruins the coat’s regrowth pattern and invites sunburn. De-shedding baths, undercoat rakes, and shade do the job better.

The golden rule

If your pet flinches, freezes, or flees, stop and reset with treats — or hand the job to us. Our soft-touch grooming sessions are built for nervous newcomers, and we’ll show you the techniques to practice at home.

  • Bathe every 4–8 weeks with pet-pH shampoo
  • Brush in layers, comb to verify
  • Trim nails little and often
  • Check ears weekly, brush teeth regularly
  • Never shave a double coat
